Hydraulic diaphragm wall garb

Diaphragm Wall Grab – Overview

A diaphragm wall grab is a heavy-duty excavation tool used in the construction of diaphragm walls (also known as slurry walls). These walls serve as deep, reinforced concrete barriers for underground structures, such as basements, tunnels, cut-and-cover metro stations, and retaining walls.

Key Features & Functions

1. High-Efficiency Excavation
- Designed to dig deep trenches (typically 30m–60m, with some models reaching 100m+).
- Works in various soil conditions, including soft clay, sand, gravel, and moderately hard rock.

2. Hydraulic or Mechanical Operation
- Hydraulic grabs (more common today) use hydraulic power for precise control and strong cutting force.
- Mechanical grabs (rope-operated) are simpler but less efficient in hard ground.

3. Slurry Support System
- Excavation is performed under bentonite slurry, which stabilizes the trench walls to prevent collapse.
- After excavation, reinforcing cages are lowered, and concrete is poured via the tremie method.

4. Applications
- Underground metro & railway projects
- Deep basements & high-rise foundations
- Flood protection & seawalls

- Cut-off walls for dams and tunnels

Advantages of Diaphragm Wall Grab

1, Deep excavation capability (deeper than sheet piles or secant piles).

2, Minimal vibration, making it suitable for urban environments.
3, High verticality control (critical for structural integrity).
4, Can be used in waterlogged or unstable soils.
